Junta’s head issues harsh warning for the young: ‘You are not immortal’
President Juanma Moreno has pleaded for people to use common sense this weekend and not ‘take home the disease that can destroy your loved ones’
The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has issued a harsh message to the young ahead of the weekend and called on them to exercise “maximum responsibility”.
“Those who believe themselves to be immune are right now the ones who are occupying the beds in many hospitals and even intensive care units. You are mortal, just like the rest of us,” he warned speaking this Friday, in Jaén.
He pleaded with young people to avoid behaviour that may lead to an increase in infections and also warned of his concern of outbreaks in communions and family gatherings.
“I ask for common sense to avoid the drama of taking home the disease that could end the lives of loved ones,” he added.
Moreno confessed he will now spend the weekends “feeling tense” especially after the first weekend without a curfew saw thousands of young people take to the streets to party.
“You can toast and celebrate that everything is over, but you know it’s not true. To do so you put a lot of people in danger and those around you don’t deserve it.”
The president extended his call for “caution” to all the population in Andalucía, taking into account that this weekend will be the second without a state of alarm or a border closure in the region. He warned that the “good weather” that coincides with holidays in other regions “could see a large number of people concentrate in coastal and inland areas in Andalucía.”
Moreno said police forces will be “very vigilant so that everyone complies with the rules”, although he has appealed to “common sense” because – as he acknowledged – “You cannot put a policeman behind everyone”.
He said again, “Now, without a border closure or a night curfew, we are left exposed. Without a powerful instrument such as the state of alarm, we have to avoid the contagion with the means we have.”
“Please be careful. Those around you deserve it.”
