Spain’s Supermarket giant Mercadona reveals the curious origin of its name
The Spanish store replied in response to a question on its official Twitter account
The Spanish supermarket giant, Mercadona, has revealed the origin of its name in response to a question on its Twitter account.
@psesasoyyo had offered three options saying: “I have read that it either comes from the words market and donates, that it comes from an Italian pasta manufacturer Mercadonna, or that it is simply a way of saying market, but I don’t know which one is real”, says the tweet.
The supermarket chain clarified the origin of the name on its official social media account, replying, “Hello! We can tell you that the Mercadona name came from Francisco Roig, our president’s brother when they saw the name on some Italian pasta in Italy and decided to remove an ‘n’ from it. Thanks and best regards.”
