Fed up with waiting to get off the aircraft and having been delayed by over an hour at London Stansted, after 30 minutes standing around on the plane, the 57-year-old Polish national – who lives in Andalucía – announced he was ‘going out via the wing’ and removed the emergency exit door.
He did not get very far – perhaps realising just how far he was from the ground – since the cabin crew talked him into getting back inside.
The traveller had taken his hand luggage bag with him.
Guardia Civil officers were waiting on the runway and he was arrested as soon as he reached the ground.
Any sanction applied will be the decision of the State Air Safety Agency (AESA).
Ryanair says the matter is ‘now in the hands of Spanish authorities’ but that it intends to ‘carefully review the structure’ of its aircraft following the incident, which made international news.
The night flight had left late on New Year’s Day, and the passenger tried to disembark at around 00.15 on January 2.
His feat was videoed by fellow passenger Fernando del Valle Villalobos – a photograph from which is shown above – who described the situation as ‘surreal’.
He complained that there was ‘no explanation’ from the airline as to why they were waiting 30 minutes to get off the plane after landing.
