Is the joining of two settlements Huercal and Overa. It is the main town of a thriving agricultural district and dependent for its prosperity on lead mining in the surrounding hills.
The centre of Huercal Overa is taken over every Monday morning by the busy market. The town has a variety of hotels and restaurants, a modern hospital, a municipal swimming pool and leisure centre. Huercal Overa is close to the modern motorway network being one Km from the main North-South coastal Mediterranneo motorway.
The towns religious architecture is very impressive and visitors should take some time to visit the Nuestra Se?ora de la Asunción church, founded in 1505, La Asunción de la Virgen built in 1748 and the Chapel of Jesús Nazareno founded in 1749 which houses a beautiful statue of Jesús of Nazareno.
Other interesting monuments and buildings are a bell tower, dating back to the Middle Ages, the old granary (Pósito) and the Via Crucis, which takes you to the Hermitage del Calvario.
During Easter Week a procession heads through the town of Huercal Overa, which celebrates the Passion of Christ. Statues are carried on floats by figures in white, brown or black robes; a religious spectacle which has been designated a National Tourist Attraction.
To bring some lush greenness to the area a number of pine tree plantations were started some years ago being mainly almond, olive and citrus are now reaching maturity and further forests are planned for the future.
